Merck for Mothers
Improving Maternal Health in Haiti’s Artibonite Region is an initiative that aimed to increase access to obstetrical and perinatal care by offering flat-fee services for pregnant women in Anse Rouge, Ennery and St-Michel de l’Attalaye, in Haiti.
In conjunction with the Project for Integrated Management of Maternal and Child Health in Artibonite (PRISMA), which was also active in the three rural communities of Artibonite, it contributed to improving maternal, newborn and child health.
Completely integrated with PRISMA, this project funded by the Merck for Mothers (MfM) Global Giving Program has been very well received by local authorities, health facilities, the local population, and by pregnant women in particular. Working simultaneously on the service offer and the demand for services, this initiative was active in:
- Raising awareness about the importance and feasibility of giving birth in an institution among the population;
- Developing a service offer that meets women’s and children’s needs;
- Increasing access to good ante- and post-natal services.
Following the PRISMA activities that were directly supported by the MfM-funded project (staff training, local awareness raising, the purchase of supplies), an increase in the number of prenatal visits and deliveries was noted in the supported health centres.
